About the book (from publisher Amulet Books)
In this funny, uncannily wise portrait of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class and of the greatness that sometimes comes in unlikely packages, Dwight, a loser, talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren’t strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise and prescient. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight’s classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, he assembles the case file that forms this novel.

Who is Yoda?

Yoda Activities

We made our Origami Yodas! We watched Mr. Angleberger's video and followed Dwight's folding instructions. It was quite a challenge but we were pleased with the results.

It is also helpful to watch Tom Angleberger's video "Make Your Own Origami Yoda." You can pause it and rewind as needed. Look in the background of the video-even Mr. Angleberger is using Dwight's folding instructions.

Do you remember Magic 8 Balls? You can ask a Magic 8 Ball a question and it mysteriously offers you a suggestion. A very vague and unclear suggestion that you are left to interpret for yourself. This is how fortune tellers and horoscopes manipulate people-they offer very vague answers leaving a person to see into the answer what they want to see. This can offer much comfort to some people or motivate them to take chances. It can also instill fear into others.

Activity idea!- Make a "Ask Yoda" puppet and display in the library. Students may ask Yoda a question and then draw a slip of paper out of a special Yoda's Wisdom Box. The paper will have one of Yoda's real quotes from a Star Wars movie. Students can interpret Yoda's response to fit their needs.

Yoda says.....

"Do or do not. There is no try." —Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back

"Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice." —Yoda in The Phantom Menace

Time to leave, it is.-Yoda
